Have you been searching for efficient ways of recycling the things that you use on a regular basis? Well, here are some simple tips to help you out in your quest
How to recycle cardboard and paper products
Newspapers
It is good to place newspapers in a unique bin. The material could be used to create new prints later. By recycling a newspaper stack that is four feet high, you end up saving a fir tree that spans more than 40 feet.
Other types of paper
Put the following in one bin:
- Glossy flyers
- Magazines
- Newspaper inserts
- Old letter
- Phone books
You can leave staples on the materials, but ensure that you get rid of plastic wrap and rubber bands. Exclude the following items from the paper recycling bin:
- Cardboard
- Laminated paper
- Carbon paper
Cardboard
Cardboard is a highly recyclable item. A good way to prepare cardboard for recycling is to flatten boxes and tie the cardboards together with a string. Ensure that the bale remains dry at all times. Do not put waxy coated, greasy material such as that used by pizza boxes for recycling.
How to recycle glass
Glass is sorted according to color. Separate glass in three distinct groups: green, clear and brown. Recycling centers consider these three groups as “container” glass.
If you have mirrors, lightbulbs, pyrex and sheet glass, store them in separate containers to the ones you use for bottles. They are generally not accepted for recycling purposes.
Plastic
It is prudent to recycle plastic because it does not break down easily. Be keen on using plastic products that can be recycled. Typically, recycling centers treat plastic in the following ways.
- Plastic bottles
Most plastic bottles are made using a high value material that is also recyclable. While disposing the bottles, remove the top and place the rest of the bottle with the general items.
- Polystyrene
Your cups and egg cartons don’t undergo biodegradation. Inquire with your recycling center whether they accept polystyrene material. Make some effort to reduce the number of household items that are made from this material.
- Polypropylene
It is termed as one of the safest forms of plastic. It is the material used to package cottage cheese, yogurt and margarine and is one of the most affordable plastic forms. Nevertheless, the market value of recycled polypropylene isn’t as high as that of other plastics.
If you can use other forms of plastic, the better.
Copper and aluminum
- Food cans
Rinse food cans and remove the labels and lids. It would be good if you can flatten them. Even if you are unable to flatten them, they will still be recycled efficiently.
- Aluminum cans
These are extremely valuable. They may be recycled as engine parts.
Tips for recycling at home
- Label the recycle bins clearly.
- Store the bins in places such as your garage.
- Place plastic bags to contain all the recyclable material. This serves to keep leakages in place.
- Clean tins and bottles before placing them in the recycle bin.
